The 2-day hike to Mount Karisimbi is physically demanding but highly rewarding. You will trek through multiple vegetation zones inside Volcanoes National Park—starting in dense rainforest, transitioning into bamboo forests, and ending in alpine terrain.
This trek requires good physical fitness and mental endurance.
Depart early from Kigali and drive شمال to Volcanoes National Park, arriving at the park headquarters for registration and a briefing by rangers.
The hike begins through lush rainforest, quickly transitioning into bamboo zones where the terrain becomes steeper. As you gain altitude, the landscape opens into afro-alpine vegetation with expansive views of the Virunga volcano chain.
You will stop along the way for a packed lunch before continuing the ascent to the base camp at around 3,700 meters.
By late afternoon, you reach camp, where porters will have set up tents. Temperatures drop significantly in the evening.
An early start before sunrise prepares you for the most challenging section—the final ascent to the summit of Mount Karisimbi.
The trail is steeper and colder, often with mist or strong winds. Reaching the summit rewards you with panoramic views across Rwanda and into the Democratic Republic of Congo.
After spending time at the top, begin a long descent back through the same ecological zones to the park exit.
Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Kigali, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.
