Itinerary

Day 1: Bisoke Volcano Hike

The tour kicks off with an early morning at 4:30 AM. You’ll be transferred to the Volcanoes National Park, home to Mount Bisoke and Sabyinyo.

After a briefing at the park headquarters, you embark on a 5-7 hour round-trip hike to the volcano’s summit (3,711 meters). The trail winds through lush rainforests, where you might spot wildlife like monkeys or birds, before opening to alpine meadows. The challenging ascent rewards you with a breathtaking view of the crater lake at the top, a vibrant turquoise gem surrounded by misty peaks. The hike demands moderate fitness, sturdy boots, and layered clothing due to unpredictable weather. Guides and porters ensure safety and share insights about the volcano’s geology and the region’s biodiversity. After descending, you’ll transfer to Gisenyi on Lake Kivu for an overnight stay, with evening downtime to relax.

Day 2: Lake Kivu Boat Cruise

The second day starts with a serene boat cruise on Lake Kivu. The cruise explores the lake’s calm waters, dotted with small islands and fishing villages. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of rolling hills and distant volcanoes while learning about the lake’s unique ecosystem and local culture from your guide. Some tours offer stops at hot springs or opportunities to swim in the lake’s safe, methane-free zones. The relaxing pace contrasts with the previous day’s exertion, offering time to unwind. The cruise typically lasts 2-3 hours, after which you return to shore for lunch and departure.
