Starting the tour from Kigali is advantageous, as it offers a shorter travel time to Uganda’s gorilla trekking regions compared to starting from Kampala.
Upon arrival, travelers typically make their way to Kisoro, a town nestled in Uganda’s southwestern region. From here, a short transfer leads to accommodations near Lake Mutanda, such as the Mutanda Lake Resort. This serene lake, framed by the Virunga mountain ranges, provides a tranquil setting for relaxation.
In the afternoon, guests can embark on a boat tour of Lake Mutanda. This excursion offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and opportunities to observe local wildlife and bird species. The calm waters and scenic backdrop make for a peaceful and picturesque experience.
Your journey begins in Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital. After a brief orientation, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. The route offers picturesque views of rolling hills and lush landscapes, characteristic of the region. The drive typically takes about 4 to 5 hours, including border formalities at the Cyanika or Katuna crossings.
Upon arrival in Bwindi, you’ll check into your lodge, nestled at Lake Mutanda where you will get to unwind at the picturesque lake. You will enjoy a peaceful canoe ride on the crystal-clear waters, surrounded by stunning volcanic landscapes and relax on the shores, taking in the breathtaking scenery and diverse birdlife. The afternoon is also free for optional activities like kayaking, swimming or guided community walks to learn about the local Batwa culture.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Return to Kigali
The day starts early with a briefing at the park headquarters, where experienced rangers provide guidelines on interacting with the gorillas. Trekking through the dense forest can be challenging, with hikes lasting from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. However, the effort is rewarded by the unforgettable experience of observing a gorilla family in their natural environment.
After the trek, you’ll will take a lunch or coffee break, before commencing the drive back to Kigali, marking the end of a memorable journey.
