This challenging yet rewarding hike is suitable for moderately fit adventurers and typically takes 6-8 hours round trip. Our team will provide all necessary equipment, safety briefings, and refreshments to ensure a memorable and safe experience in one of Rwanda’s most spectacular natural settings.

At the twin lakes, you’ll be mesmerized by the tranquil waters surrounded by lush, terraced hillsides. These picturesque lakes, separated by a narrow strip of land, provide excellent opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and peaceful reflection.
The highlight of your journey will be the challenging yet rewarding hike up Bisoke Volcano. As you ascend through diverse ecosystems, from bamboo forests to alpine meadows, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Virunga Mountains. At the summit, a beautiful crater lake awaits, providing a sense of accomplishment and awe-inspiring vistas of the surrounding landscape.
Morning:
5:30 AM – Early Breakfast and Departure
Enjoy an early breakfast at your lodge (packed lunch provided for the hike). Depart by 6:00 AM for a 30-minute drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi.
Arrive at 6:30 AM for registration and a mandatory briefing at 7:00 AM. Present your hiking permit. Pick up a walking stick for balance.
8:00 AM – Mount Bisoke Hike (6–7 hours)
Drive ~40 minutes to the trailhead (2,700 m elevation). Begin the hike, accompanied by armed rangers for safety against wildlife like forest elephants or buffaloes (encounters rare). The trail covers ~6–7 km one way with a 1,000 m elevation gain.
Trek through diverse vegetation zones: bamboo forests (up to 2,800 m), Hagenia-Hypericum woodlands (2,800–3,200 m), and sub-alpine meadows near the summit. Watch for golden monkeys, unique plants, and, if lucky, a brief glimpse of mountain gorillas (10-minute viewing allowed, no photos). Avoid stinging nettles in lower zones.
Reach the summit (3,711 m) after ~4 hours, depending on fitness and pace. Marvel at the 400 m-wide crater lake, with views of Mount Mikeno (DRC) and Mount Karisimbi (Rwanda-DRC border) on clear days. Temperatures may drop to 10°C; spend ~30 minutes for photos and a snack, weather permitting.
